We take a look at the performance of the Dow Jones (DJIA), Nasdaq and S&P 500 over the last trading week (11 May 2020 - 15 May 2020). While coronavirus and partial reopening of states ruled the news, the major US indices ended on a slightly negative note for the week.
As we have shown before in the last couple of years the Nasdaq tends to outperform both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones. "

Performance of the Dow Jones, Nasdaq and S&P 500 over the last week

The image below shows the performance of the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and the Nasdaq over the last week. And as it shows the major indices all ended the week with slight losses.

The summary below shows the performance of the various indices for the last week, 11 May 2020 to 15 May 2020 (sorted from best performer to worst performer)
  • Nasdaq: -1.17%
  • S&P 500: -2.26%
  • Dow Jones: -2.65%

As we have shown before in the last couple of years the Nasdaq tends to outperform both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones. While the Dow Jones tends to be the worst performer of the three major indices. And last week was no different. With the Nasdaq being the best performer while the Dow Jones ended up being the worst performer during the last trading week.

Over the last 10 years the three main US stock indices provided the following returns:
  • Nasdaq: 275.93%
  • S&P500: 144.88%
  • Dow Jones: 118.17%
 As we mentioned earlier it seems like the Nasdaq is the index to be invested in as it offers the best short and longer term returns at this point in time, while the Dow Jones (DJIA) tends to underperform both against the Nasdaq and the s&P500.
