Dow Jones performance under Biden, Trump and Obama
The graphic below shows the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) under three United States presidents. They are Joe Biden, Donald Trump and Barack Obama.
So 15 months into each of these presidents terms, the Dow Jones Industrial Average returned the following under their watch:
So looking at the performance 15 months into their terms its Donald Trump that is in a clear lead. Under Trump the Dow increased by 30.9% over 15 months, while it increased by 20.2% under Joe Biden and by 16.9% under Barack Obama
- Donald Trump: 30.9%
- Joe Biden: 20.2%
- Barack Obama: 16.9%
So looking at the performance 15 months into their terms its Donald Trump that is in a clear lead. Under Trump the Dow increased by 30.9% over 15 months, while it increased by 20.2% under Joe Biden and by 16.9% under Barack Obama

Every president has had their own issues to deal with, from financial crises, to the Covid-19 pandemic, they all had their own issues that had to be dealt with and that had an impact on the performance of the Dow Jones and stock markets in general. While 15 months is a short reference period, it will be interesting to see if Trump maintains the large gap between himself and the others when we look at it over a longer period
While the above provides the returns provided by the markets, what would be really interesting to see is the real returns, that is the returns of the stock market excluding the effects of inflation. So the returns after inflation has been removed. We suspect that the story will be a lot different if one looks at real returns. Over the last couple of years the United States have seen a sharp increase in their inflation rate, which will have an impact on the real returns especially on president Trump and Biden.
